Roku Error Code 003 Fix

You can face Roku error code 003 while updating your Roku device. This typically happens due to connectivity issues. In this scenario, your Roku device is having a problem connecting to the Roku servers. This can lead to Roku error code 003 on your device and you’ll not be able to update the software of your Roku device.

I’ve also been using Roku for the past few years and encountered such Error Codes while streaming contents and updating the Device Firmware.

In this post, I’m going to explain the reasons for this issue and how you can fix Roku not updating error 003. 

Why is My Roku Not Updating?

Below we’ve mentioned some reasons that can cause error code 003 while updating your Roku device.

  1. Problem with network security protocols can result in error code 003. Making changes to your network security protocol can help you in fixing this issue.
  2. You can also get this error if the servers at Roku are not working properly or when the Roku servers are down.
  3. You can also face this issue if the Roku device is not connected to the wifi or when your internet is not working.

After learning the reason for error 003 let’s proceed with the troubleshooting steps below.

How Do I Fix Roku Error Code 003?

Roku Error Code 003 can be fixed by rebooting your Roku and streaming device, improving your internet speed, adjusting your network security protocol settings, connecting your Roku to another network, or resetting your Roku device.

Is Roku Down?

You can face error code 003 when Roku servers are not working or when they are down. To check this, you can go to Downdetector or Roku’s official page.

Here, you can check the live status of Roku servers. Now check if the Roku servers are working or not. If the Roku servers are down, then this is the reason you’re facing the Error code 003.

There you can also see if other users are facing issues while using Roku or not. If others are also facing same, then you cannot do much about this situation. You have to wait for Roku to fix this on their servers.

When the issue is resolved at Roku’s end, you’ll be able to download and install the latest version of Roku’s firmware without any issue.

Restart Your Roku

Sometimes restarting your Roku device can help you in re-establishing the internet connection. After that, you’ll be able to update your Roku device without any issue. To restart your Roku follow the steps below.

  1. Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  2. Now, press the Up button and select the Settings option.
  3. Scroll down and select the System option.
  4. Again scroll down, and select System restart.
  5. Now, select Restart.

Now, try connecting and updating your Roku device. Now you’ll be able to update your Roku device without facing Roku error code 003.

Check Your Internet Connection

While updating your Roku device make sure you have a good internet connection or else you’ll get error code 003. To check, if the internet is working properly or not go to speedtest.net.

You can also check the internet connection by using your mobile or your pc. Open a browser or app like YouTube and check if the Wi-Fi is working properly. Make sure your Roku TV is connected to the correct wireless network. 

To improve your internet connection you can move your router closer to your Roku device. This will improve the internet strength and can help in resolving the Roku update error 003.

Also, make sure that there are no obstacles between Roku and your router. 

There’s another way to improve your Internet connection is by using an Ethernet Connection. Using an ethernet connection you’ll get proper internet speed with a reliable connection. After using ethernet cable, try updating your Roku device again.

Make Changes To Network Security Protocol Settings

Making changes to current network security protocol settings can help you in fixing the error code 003. To make changes to internet security protocol settings follow the steps below:

  1. Look for your router IP address, you’ll find it at the back of your router. Open the browser and type and search your IP address. (a common example of IP address: 92.168.8.1)
  2. Now, go to Settings and, then head to the Security or Wireless option.
  3. Make sure that security mode is set to WPAK2-PSK (TKIP).
  4. After making these changing, connect your Roku device to your Wi-Fi.

Now check if you’re able to get past error code 003 on the Roku device or not.

Use Another Internet Connection

If you’re still getting the Error code 003 on your Roku device, then you can try using any other network. You can use your mobile hotspot for fixing this issue.

  • Connect your Roku device to your mobile hotspot.
  • Now complete the software update process on Roku using your mobile hotspot.
  • After updating the Roku device, complete the setup using the same mobile hotspot internet connection.
  • After updating and setting up your Roku device disconnect and connect it to your wireless network.

Now check if you’re able to use Roku or not.

Power Cycle Your Roku Device

If you’re getting error code 003 due to a temporary glitch, then power cycling your device can help you in fixing this error. To perform the power cycle follow the steps below:

Roku TV users;

  1. Turn off the Roku TV.
  2. Unplug it from the wall.
  3. Wait for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Now, plug in the Roku TVs cord back into the outlet and turn it on.
  5. Afterward, try updating your Roku TV again and see if the issue is resolved or not.

Roku Stick

  1. Turn off your Roku Stick using Roku remote.
  2. Remove Roku stick from the TV and unplug the Roku adapter.
  3. Wait for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Now, connect Roku Stick to TV and connect the Adapter into power source and turn it on.

After following the steps above, check if the Roku error 003 is fixed or not. 

Reset Your Roku Device

If you’re still not able to update your Roku Stick or Roku TV, then try resetting your Roku to its factory default version. After that you’ll be able to update Roku without facing error 003 on your Roku device.

  1. On your Roku remote, press the Home button.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Now, select System option.
  4. Go to Advanced System Settings.
  5. Choose Factory reset and select Factory reset everything.

After factory reset, you’ll be able to use Roku Stick or Roku TV without facing Error code 003.

Contact Your ISP and Roku

If you’re still getting the issue on your Roku device. Then you can first try contacting your ISP. In many cases, the internet service providers were able to make changes from their side. And after that users were able to update the Roku and set up their Roku without any issue.

Sometimes your ISP needs to approve some device for them to access the internet connection. Without verifying you can get such connectivity issues on your Roku or any other device.
