Thread Stuck in Device Driver

Thread stuck in device driver happens when a driver file is stuck in a loop. Sometimes this issue occurs after a reinstall install or update or driver on your pc. In this issue sometimes users are not able to boot into windows. They stuck on windows starting blue screen and their pc will restart and restart. As this is a known issue you can follow the troubleshooting steps which will fix the thread stuck in device driver error on your pc.

Methods To Fix Thread Stuck in Device Driver

Update Drivers

  1. Press the Windows button and type Device Manager.
  2. Select the device manager from the result and open it.
  3. Select the category to see the names of devices that you want to update.
  4. Right-click on the selected drivers and choose the update driver option.
  5. Click on Search automatically for updated driver software option.

Windows will automatically search and update the latest version of the driver for your pc. Most of the time it’s the graphics and audio driver which causes the issue. So you need to update display adapters, monitors, audio input, and outputs drivers. When the process complete restart your pc and check if the thread stuck in the device driver is fixed on your pc.

Reinstall Device Driver

  1. Right-click on the Windows icon from the bottom left side of the screen.
  2. Select and open device manager from the result.
  3. Select the device that you want to uninstall and right-click to uninstall.
  4. Now restart your pc window will automatically reinstall the driver.

Run BSOD Troubleshooter

You can use the inbuilt windows BSOD troubleshooter which can help in fixing the thread stuck in device driver error. Follow the steps below to run BSOD Troubleshooter.

  1. Press the win+I key simultaneously to open settings and click on update and security.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot from the left side of the menu.
  3. Now right click on the blue screen and click on run the troubleshooter.
  4. Now it will take some time to scan the problem in the window. When the Troubleshoot process complete restart your pc and check if the issue is fixed.

If the above methods didn’t help in fixing the thread stuck in the device driver then try running the sfc scan to repair the corrupted files on your pc.

  1. Click on the start window and type command prompt.
  2. Choose command prompt from the result and right-click to Run as administrator.
  3. Enter the command SFC / scannow into the window and hit the Enter button.
  4. Now you have to wait until SFC on the process. 

Restart your pc and check if the error is resolved on your pc.

Run the DISM Scan

Running dism command on your pc can sometimes fix the BSOD thread stuck in the device driver issue. Follow the steps below

  1. Click on the start window and type command prompt.
  2. Choose command prompt from the result and right-click to Run as administrator
  3. Enter the command DISM/Online/CleanupImage/RestroHealth into the window and hit the Enter button.
  4. When the process is finished restart your pc and check if the issue is fixed on your pc.

Thread Stuck in Device Driver Restart Loop Fixed

If you’re unable to boot into windows then follow these steps to boot your pc into safe mode then follow the troubleshooting steps to fix the thread stuck in the device driver.

  1. Restart your pc for 3-4 times windows will automatically send you to the recovery screen.
  2. Now choose to see the advanced repair option.
  3. Choose the Troubleshoot option.

  2. Now select uninstall updates and hit enter

  2. Restart your pc and check if the thread stuck in the device driver is fixed or not.

Method 2-

  1. If you’re again facing the issue restart your pc 2-3 times and from the recovery, choose advanced repair options.
  2. Select the troubleshoot option and then select the advanced option
  3. In the advanced option select start-up settings
  4. Now click on the restart option
  5. Press the f4 button to boot your pc in safe mode.
  6. Now right click on the windows icon or press windows key + x
  7. From the options click on device manager
  8. Now try updating your audio and video drivers.
  9. You need to update your monitors, display adapters, audio inputs, and outputs driver.
  10. To update a driver right click on the driver and click on update windows will automatically search and the latest driver for your pc.
  11. After update restart your pc and check if the blue screen of the death thread stuck in the device driver is fixed or not.

If you’re still facing the issue then try the rollback update and uninstall device option to see if that fixes the issue. 

Fix Thread stuck in device driver on a dedicated graphic card pc

If you’re facing an issue after a recent installation of a dedicated graphic card or driver update of the graphic card then follow the steps below.

Note: If you’re stuck in the loop of thread stuck in device driver then restart your pc for 3-4 times and your pc will send you to the recovery screen. Then select see advanced repair option then select troubleshoot option and then advanced option. Now select the start-up setting and click on restart and press f4 to boot your pc into safe mode. After booting into safe mode follow the steps below

  1. Press the windows+x button and from the option choose device manager.
  2. Now click on the display adapter and right-click on the dedicated graphic card driver
  3. Click on the update option
  4. Restart your pc and check if the thread stuck in the device driver is fixed or not.

If the issue persists try installing the latest version of the dedicated graphics driver from the manufacturer website. Follow the steps below

  1. If you’re stuck in the loop then you need to boot your pc into safe mode
  2. Now go to the device manager and uninstall the dedicated graphics driver.
  3. Download the latest version of the dedicated graphics driver from the manufacturer’s website.
  4. Install the latest graphic driver on your pc
  5. Now restart your pc and check if the thread stuck in the device driver is fixed

You can follow the other troubleshooting steps to fix this issue.

  1. If you’re in a restart loop then follow the steps above to boot your pc into safe mode. If you’re not facing the restart loop then simply follow the steps below.
  2. Right-click on the Windows icon from the bottom left side of the screen
  3. Choose the device manager.
  4. Now click on the display adapter
  5. Right-click on the dedicated graphics driver 
  6. Click on disable the device.
  7. Now the dedicated graphics driver will be disabled on your pc and you’ll not face thread stuck in the device driver.

In this scenario, this is a hardware problem you can either replace the graphic card of using your pc with the integrated graphics.

Uninstall Recently Installed Application

If you’re facing a thread stuck in device driver error after a recent installation of a program on your pc. Then you need to uninstall application one by one and check which one is the culprit for the issue.

  1. Press windows+I to open windows settings.
  2. Click apps
  3. Click on apps & features from the left side of the screen
  4. Now in the sort by option select install to view the latest installed app on the top of the list

Remove Attach External Devices

When you attach hardware like a mouse or keyboard to your pc with the help of USB ports, it installs their driver on your pc. Sometimes these drivers can stuck in an infinite loop and cause the thread stuck in device driver issue. To fix this error you need to completely shut down your pc. Now remove and attached external hardware from your pc. Restart your pc and check if this fixes the thread stuck in device driver error on your pc.

Update the windows

Most BSOD errors are fixed after windows update because due to the latest window update are comes with new features and due to the old version of the window are the reason for BSOD error.

  1. Press window+ I key simultaneously to open the settings and select updates and security options.
  2. A pop-up window will open click on the window update section and select check for updates.
  3. Process will take time to updates till do not do any other work on the window. And after window updates restart your computer to check whether the problem is occurring
