Fix Alexa Stuck on Updating Device

If you are using the Alexa device you might encounter this irritating error, where Alexa keeps on updating. You might have tried some troubleshooting but if that didn’t help then this article is for you. We have provided all the troubleshooting methods that can be done to solve this issue.

(Note: Before proceeding please make sure that your Wi-Fi is working and Alexa device is on.)

Updating/Re-installing the Alexa App

If you are facing this issue, then it will be recommended that you update your Alexa app. You can try deleting and re-installing the Alexa app. Deleting the app is a good idea as it will clear all the app cache and data and you can login again without any issue. Here are the steps to update/re-install the app:

  1.  Open the App Store/Play Store.
  2.  Search for ‘Alexa App’
  3.  Click on the ‘Update’ button if you see one.
  4.  To delete/uninstall the app, press and hold the Alexa app icon from the home screen and click on delete/uninstall.
  5.  To install the app again follow the first two steps and click on install.

(Note: You need to login again with your username and password on the Alexa app if you’re reinstalling the app)

Restarting the Alexa device

After updating your Alexa app, try to restart your Alexa device. To restart, just unplug the device from the power source, wait for 10 seconds, and plug it back in. After setup, check if you’re getting the same issue and if so then follow the next step.

Reset the Alexa Device

You can reset your Alexa device easily but you have to be sure of the name and generation of your Alexa device as the steps to reset the Alexa device varies from generation to type of device. Below I have mentioned the reset steps for common Alexa devices:

Reset your Echo/Echo Dot (3rd or 4th Generation)

  1. Press and hold the Dot button (Action button) on your Echo device.
  2. Hold it for 25 seconds until you see the orange light spinning continuously (Alexa will say resetting your device).

Reset your Echo/Echo Dot/Echo Plus (2nd Generation)

  1. Press and hold the Mute and Volume down buttons simultaneously.
  2. Hold it for 20 seconds until you see the orange light spinning continuously (Alexa will say resetting your device).

Reset your Echo Show

  1. Press and hold the Mute and Volume down buttons simultaneously.
  2. Hold it for 15 seconds until you see the Amazon logo.
  3. To set up your device again just follow the on-screen instruction after reset.

After resetting your device, set up your echo device with your Wi-Fi from the Alexa app and check if the issue is resolved.

Reset your Wi-Fi Router

If you’re still facing the same issue, then the problem can be with the Wi-Fi. You can check it by changing your Wi-Fi. If the problem is with the Wi-Fi or if you don’t have any other Wi-Fi, then you can reset your Wi-Fi router with the help of your ISP.

(Note: After trying the above steps, set up your Alexa device and leave it for 30 minutes if Alexa says updating your device.)

If the problem persists, after trying all the troubleshooting then the problem can be with the server of Amazon and you have to contact Amazon support to file a ticket for it. You can also check our post on how to fix amazon fire tablet not charging.
