What Causes Discord Sound Not Working Issue in Discord?
The cause of this issue is the improper settings of audio or your default audio device is different in settings. Sometimes the issue is caused by a bug in your discord application and a pending update for your Discord app. Do not worry if you’re facing the same issue, just follow the below methods till your issue resolves.
Can’t hear anyone on discord?

- Check for Deafen: Check if you muted or deafened yourself or your friend. To check this, go to the headset and mic icon, then unmute and undeafen the icons.
- Note: It’s possible that your Server/Channel admin muted or deafened you. If this is the case, reach out to your Server/Channel admin and ask them to unmute or undeafen you.
- OS is Fully Update: Ensure that your device is updated to its latest version. If it’s not, then head to your Software Update section and update your OS.
- Update Discord: Ensure that your Discord application is running on the updated version. If not, head to your device’s app store and update it.
Refresh Your Discord
Sometimes, it’s a temporary glitch or a software bug causing the issue. It can be resolved by refreshing the discord application. To do so,
- Press the Ctrl (Windows)/ Cmd (Mac) + R button on your keyboard simultaneously.
- Your discord app will be refreshed, and start checking for updates.

- Right-click onyour device name (headphones or speaker) and select Set as Default Device.
- Right-click on your device name again and select Set as Default Communication Device.
- Click on Apply and select OK.

Enable Legacy Audio Subsystem
If you tried above troubleshooting and you are still facing the same issue then there might be a compatibility issue with your device with discord. It means that Discord’s latest audio subsystem is not compatible with your hardware components. Do not worry as this can be resolved by enabling the Legacy Audio subsystem.
Here are the steps that you need to follow to use the Legacy Audio Subsystem:
- Launch Discord App
- Go to the User Settings (gear icon). It will be under the server channel at the right side of your avatar
- Click Voice & Video Scroll down and locate Audio Subsystem and select Legacy from the drop-down
- Enable the Legacy Audio Subsystem
- You will see a confirmation dialogue box, Click on Okay
- Now close the Settings and restart your Discord

Discord not playing through headphones
If you’re unable to hear the voice of your friends or others, try to check if your headphone is securely connected to your device or not. If not, unplug it and plug it back into the audio port. Select default Sound Output/Input
If you have tried both methods mentioned above and still not getting the audio then you might have selected an incorrect audio device in the Discord. It can be resolved by selecting the default audio Output/Input in the Discord.
Follow the below steps to check and change the default audio device:
- Launch Discord
- Go to the User Settings (gear icon). It will be under the server channel at the right side of your avatar
- Click Voice & Video
- You will find Output and Input at the top

Go for the Web Version
